Why Group Trips Always End With Money Confusion (And How to Fix It)

Ever come back from a trip with friends and still have no idea who owes who? That feeling of paying more than your share — or the opposite, getting back less than you spent. Knowing you'll have to be the one to remind a friend they owe you. Or just feeling annoyed: why am I paying for something I never even touched?

Worst of all, this usually falls on one person: they collect the receipts, chase everyone for details, and then have to explain how they worked it all out. Adding up dozens of expenses from several people over several days just doesn't work in your head — and explaining your math to everyone else is even harder than doing the math itself.

We ran into these problems all the time, so we built EventSplit — an app that tracks group expenses on a trip openly, so everyone can see exactly what's going on.

How EventSplit Solves This

You create an event and add your friends to it. If someone already has the app, they'll get a notification that they've been added. If they don't, just send them the event link on messenger or show them a QR code on the spot. (More on inviting people in a separate post.)

From there, everyone adds their own expenses and confirms them. All expenses show up in one shared list right away — there's no single "accountant" for the group; everything's visible from the start.

Once expenses are confirmed, everyone gets a push notification: time to mark what you were part of — both your own expenses and everyone else's. Once everyone's confirmed their expenses and marked their participation, the event creator hits calculate — and out comes a finished list: who owes who, and how much.

Everyone sees not just their own transfers, but everyone else's too. That's intentional — the more transparent the math is, the less room there is for tension in the group.

Splitting the Bill Isn't the Same as Closing It

The math is done, but real life moves faster than debts get paid. Everyone's back at work, back at school, back to their own thing — and reminding a friend "hey, you still owe me" feels awkward, even over small amounts. So some transfers just sit there for months. If the person you owe has Premium, EventSplit sends the debtor a daily reminder until the transfer is sent and confirmed — so you never have to be the one nagging a friend for money.

What About Longer Trips?

If a trip stretches over several days with different activities — not everyone joins every outing, some things get paid for separately — a flat list of thirty expenses turns into a mess pretty fast.

That's what event grouping is for (a Premium feature): the whole trip becomes one container, with each day inside it, and each day's own events inside that. You can check the total for the whole trip or just one day — nothing gets lost in one long list.

Who This Is For

EventSplit isn't for splitting one dinner between two or three people — you can do that math in your head. It's built for groups of 4 or more who travel together regularly and probably will again. Everyone installing the app is the one upfront cost — in exchange for never ending a trip with an awkward money mess.
